We Indians love our cute little hatchbacks. They are easy to manoeuvre in tight traffic, easy to park, and cheap to buy and maintain. But what some of us miss is the zippy acceleration. What if these hatches were given a steroid shot? While we dream about that, below is a wishlist of five hot super-minis we would love to see in India.
Suzuki Swift Sport
Price: Rs 13.54 lakh
Among the top-three selling cars in the country and with over 1.2 million examples on the road, the Swift is no stranger to the country. But the Swift Sport is another animal, and will further fuel the many after-market mods we already see on the Swift. At over double the price of its more demure twin, the Sport offers a bigger 136-bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine, 6-speed transmission, sports body kit with xenon headlights and retuned suspension. What makes it so zippy is that it is super light versus rivals. Volkswagen Polo GTi
Price: Rs 18 lakh
Like the Swift, this is another car that we already see on our roads. The Polo is clearly positioned for the enthusiast—it is more expensive than its rivals, looks sporty, and has better handling and built. VW India already offers the Polo GT with a bigger 104-bhp 1.2-litre TSI engine, but we want more—namely the GTi with the 189-bhp 1.8-litre TSI unit. Expensive, yes, but worth the price. Renault Clio RS
Price: Rs 18.35 lakh
The Renault badge has grown bigger over the previous generation and the design much more sharper. The Clio RS offers a 1.6-litre petrol engine, which though smaller than the 2-litre of the previous generation, offers the same 197-bhp power. You also get paddle shifts, a 7-inch touchscreen, and in some ways the Clio RS has toned down from before to appeal to a broader audience. Ford Fiesta ST
Price: Rs 16.65 lakh
In the company of brutish muscle cars, hot hatches don’t really find any space. Not true! The Fiesta ST may be one of the few super-minis from the land of “liberty”, but it has earned its place. Rally legend Ken Block may have used a 650-bhp Fiesta ST for his popular Gymkhana stunt series, but what you can get is a more sober 180-bhp 1.6-litre version. Best of all, the Fiesta ST is great fun and great value! Peugeot 208 GTi
Price: Rs 11.05 lakh
Peugeot may be facing major financial challenges at home, but it is still the second French carmaker to make this list. Among the cheapest hot hatches, the 208 GTi has far less bodywork to differentiate itself from the rest of the range, but nonetheless is a good starting point into the world of fast cars. It comes with a 197-bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine, a splash of chrome, but most other things remain the same.

(All prices are approximate, calculated from euro/dollar values)
